There’s a reason I always say:
“Movement is medicine — and walking is the gateway drug.”
As a Pilates instructor with 23 years of experience, I’ve seen firsthand how something as simple as walking can transform not just the body — but the mind and spirit, too. And out here at Elmwood Place Pilates, walking isn’t just a chore to check off. It’s a ritual, a rhythm, a return to yourself.
Our Walkin’ Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday after class — once that good ol’ Texas heat finally gives us a break. We’ve got hills, dips, and the kind of fresh country air that makes you forget your phone and remember your breath. The landscape at Elmwood isn’t flat — and that’s a good thing. These little climbs challenge what I call the cupcake line — where the glutes meet the hamstrings.
(Yes ma’am, we bake it ‘til we shake it.)

But walking isn’t just about muscle tone. When you walk mindfully, the whole body lights up. You activate the nervous system in just the right way — releasing feel-good neurotransmitters, oxygenating your blood, and flushing out stale air from the lungs. That deep breath? It’s free medicine. Just like walking.
And this is where Pilates comes in. Add a little axial elongation. Stack that head over your heels like steel. Breathe deep and exhale fully — from your boots to your brainstem. Now you’re not just walking. You’re realigning. You’re healing. You’re waking up the part of you I call the inner physician — the body’s built-in wisdom that knows exactly how to restore balance.
