When I began on my teaching journey, I had one goal in mind- get my comprehensive certification. Day after day I studied, watched, and trained, with my end goal in mind. Finally, after I finished my last assessment, I sat listening to my trainer give what I thought would be a “congratulations – you’ve finally made it” speech. Instead, she told us “you are still a small fish in a big pond. Your journey to be a teacher is just now beginning.” I felt such a let down that day. How could I come so far but still be at the beginning?
I still think of the talk I heard on assessment day. Now – three years later – I truly understand what she meant. I have grown more as a teacher over the last three years since I completed my formal training because I have learned through my clients, my experiences, my teaching successes and failures. I grow and learn every day with each client session and each class I teach. The Pilates teacher training is a journey that never truly ends.
